Official Rules

• The contest is open to all students in grades 6-12 who live in or attend school in Brighton.
• Students may compete in the Junior Division (grades 6-9) or the Senior Division    (grades 10-12).
• Each division has fiction, non-fiction, and poetry categories.
• One first prize of $50, one second prize of $25, and up to four $10 honorable mention prizes will be awarded in the three categories in each division, provided the judges feel an award is justified.
• The criteria of judging are originality, clarity of ideas, and English usage.
• Subject matter is unrestricted.
• Entries must be originals written by the contestant.
• Prose may be a maximum of eight pages.
• Entries must be printed on 8.5” x 11” paper in minimum 12-point font with standard margins. Single or double-spaced entries will be accepted.
• The title and page numbers must appear at the top of each page.
• For equity in judging, no other personal identifying data may appear on any pages other than the cover page (see below).
• Contestants must provide four printed, single-sided copies of each entry and a separate cover page.
• The cover page must include: title; contestant’s name, complete address, and phone number; contestant’s school and grade; and if the entry is fiction, non-fiction, or poetry.
• A maximum of two entries in poetry and two entries in prose (for a total of four entries combined) will be accepted from each contestant.
• No more than one award will be given in each of the poetry and prose categories to a single contestant (for example, if one person enters two poems, only one can win a prize).
• To receive a list of the winning entries, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). Entrants who do not enclose an SASE will not receive individual notification regarding their entries unless they are awarded a prize.
• Winners will be posted on our website in April 2024.

• Entries must be submitted by Sunday, February 16, 2025 at 4 p.m.
