Women in Politics: Francis Perkins

Women in Politics: Francis Perkins In-Person

Francis Perkins (1880-1965) began her political career helping Al Smith (first Irish-Catholic governor of NY) with workers issues, and then she worked with FDR when he was governor. FDR brought Perkins to the White House when he became president, and she was the first woman to ever serve in the president's cabinet as Secretary of Labor. She helped create the Social Security Act. Learn more about this trailblazing woman in this talk by History Professor Mark Sample.
